Orissa Govt stands by POSCO project
Orissa Government firm on Rs 52,000-crore mega steel POSCO project.
"Displacement goes with any move for industrialisation. The state government's new resettlement and rehabilitation (RR) policy will take care of that," Revenue Minister Manmohan Samal said.
Describing the RR policy as "most progressive" which even the central government was consulting, Samal said its objective was to ensure that the displaced person's economic status improved after he was shifted from his own village.
Responding to demands by opposition members to shift the site of the project elsewhere, the minister said the present site near Paradip was the most suitable location where the 12 million tonne per annum plant could be set up.
"Of this land, barely 10 per cent is privately-owned while the rest is government land," he said while clarifying to points raised after an opposition adjournment motion was taken up for consideration.
POSCO, which proposed to bring in the biggest ever FDI into the state, required 4,004 acres of which 437.6 acres were private land, he said adding this included 411.1 acres of agricultural land and 26.5 acres of homestead land.
