Jindal Steel & Power Ltd commissions India's largest steel melting shop at Angul, Odisha

KOLKATA: Jindal Steel & Power Ltd ( JSPL) has commissioned a 2.5 million tonne Steel Melting Shop (SMS) and allied unit as part of the company’s six million tonne per annum (mtpa) greenfield integrated steel project in Odisha.

With commissioning of the SMS, JSPL has completed 2.5 million tonne per annum (mtpa) capacity out of the first phase of the six million tonne integrated capacity due to come up at Angul.

“The electric arc furnace of the SMS is of 250 tonne capacity and is the largest in size in India and second largest in Asia. Commissioning the SMS is an important milestone for our project. With this landmark achievement, we have achieved the 2.5 mtpa steel production capacity in the first phase,” said Dinesh Saraogi, executive director (projects) of JSPL, Angul Unit.

Last year, the company had commissioned a 1.5 million tonne Wide Plate Mill, capable of producing 5-metre wide plates making it the country’s widest plate mill as part of the Angul project. “Our Angul plant is of 2.5 mt capacity now and we shall commission our b alance 3.5 mt by the end of 2015. We will fulfill our commitment to Odisha,” said V R Sharma, deputy managing director & CEO (Steel), JSPL.

The technology for the SMS, proved by SMS-Siemag, has a high flexibility in terms of raw materials since it can use solid hot feed, solid cold feed and hot metal feed. The hot direct reduced iron (DRI) produced from the DRI plant will be directly fed into the electric arc furnace at 550 degree centigrade. It is also equipped with latest features like Break-out Prediction System (BOPS), Electromagnetic Mould level control (VUHZ) and Stopper control through electro servo actuator (VEMA).
