Jharkhand CM hopeful about Arcelor-Mittal project

Chief Minister Arjun Munda on Thursday said he was very optimistic about Arcelor-Mittal Steel setting up its project in Jharkhand even as a team from the steel major is expected to visit the neighbouring Orissa next week.

GUMLA (JHARKHAND): Chief Minister Arjun Munda on Thursday said he was very optimistic about Arcelor-Mittal Steel setting up its project in Jharkhand even as a team from the steel major is expected to visit the neighbouring Orissa next week.

"The proposal of Mittal Steel is well on track in Jharkhand. Every bottleneck will be removed to facilitate the project," Munda told newsmen here, about hundred km from state capital Ranchi.

Expressing confidence that the proposed 12-million tonne greenfield project would come up in Jharkhand, Munda said all the issues like displacement and mineral policies would be sorted out at the earliest so that the proposal would be through on time.

According to well-placed sources in Ranchi, Munda could meet steel tycoon Lakshmi Niwas Mittal in London, on his way back from US, to discuss about the latter's Jharkhand proposal.

The Chief Minister is scheduled to fly to the US on July 15. He is taking his two sons, Abhinav (eight) and Avinash (five), to the US for treatment.

Representatives of the world's largest steel conglomerate are expected to visit Orissa next week to assess the facilities available in that state for setting up the 12 MT steel plant proposed by Mittal recently.

Mittal had made it clear during his visit to Orissa and New Delhi on July seven that he would choose either Orissa or Jharkhand for the 12 million tonne plant at an investment of about $9 billion, depending on which state government gave better facilities and support.

About the Jharkhand project, Mittal said it was not progressing fast. The government has to address clearance of mining rights and related issues, he had said.

When asked by reporters in New Delhi on that day, Munda said he had no problem with Mittal Steel's decision to set up a steel plant in neighbouring Orissa.

"Mittal is a big player who can have more than one plant in India," Munda had said and pointed out that the steel tycoon had not spelt that he was pulling out of Jharkhand.

Munda had further claimed that the NDA government was fully cooperating with Mittal Steel, which has examined many sites for setting up a plant.
