HYDERABAD: Jammalamadugu mandal in Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh has been selected as the prospective site for the Rs 4,500-crore proposed steel plant of state Chief Minister Y S Rajshekhara Reddy's son Y S Jaganmohan Reddy, official sources said on Monday.
The setting up of the steel plant with three million tonne per annum (MTPA) initial capacity was announced by Jaganmohan in a recent political meeting.
Sources in the Secretariat said, "The Company is eyeing on 8,000 acres at Ambavaram in Jammalamadugu mandal for the steel project. The state government is close to finalising guidelines to handover the land, as the MoU is likely to be signed on May 15."
The setting up of the plant in Kadapa, the native district of the Chief Minister, will be an industrial boon to the backward Rayalaseema region, sources said.
G Janardhan Reddy, an expelled BJP MLC from Bellary, is also a partner in the mega project.
Industry sources confirmed that Kolkata-based consulting agency M N Dastur and Company Private Limited (Dastur Co) recently submitted a draft report to the management of the company.
The report includes the details of process route options for iron ore and assessment of land and water requirement. As per the estimation, a steel plant with an MTPA capacity, choosing blast furnace and direct reduced Iron (DRI) route, would require land nearly 750 acres.
