CIL not to raise thermal coal prices: Bagrodia

Coal India will not hike prices of thermal coal to check any indirect impact of mineral on other products.

KOLKATA: In view of surging inflation, Minister of State for Coal Santosh Bagrodia said Coal India will not hike prices of thermal coal to check any indirect impact of mineral on other products.

Assuring that there would be abundance of the commodity in the market, he told reporters that instead of 3 million tonne (MT), 15 MT of coal would be sold through e-auction in May and June and the situation would be reviewed after that.

There is a stock of 47 MT which would be liquidated and discussions are being held with the railways and road transport for lifting more coal, he said.

To a question whether the price of coking coal would go up, Bagrodia said coking coal was not included in the thermal grade, "the quantity of coking coal supply is small."

Meanwhile, Bharat Coking Coal, a subsidiary of Coal India, has decided to hike the price of coking coal.

Bagrodia said the entire requirement of SSI would be met under the 'aam aadmi' policy of the UPA government. "Small and medium players in cement, power and other sectors would get coal at the price being paid by big industries.
