Chhattisgarh govt for steel plant by NMDC

Chhattisgarh government has urged the Centre to ask National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) to set up an integrated steel plant at Nagrnar.

NEW DELHI: Chhattisgarh government has urged the Centre to ask National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) to set up an integrated steel plant at Nagrnar instead of the proposed sponge iron plant, for which the state government has already alloted land.

Chief Minister Raman Singh met Steel Minister Ram Vilas Paswan here last night and made a case for getting a steel plant in Nagrnar. Intigrated steel plant will generate more employment opportunities and revenues in Nagrnar.

Chhattisgarh government had earlier alloted 600 acre land to NMDC for a proposed sponge iron plant in the state.

"Chhattisgarh government has demanded an integerated steel plant at Nagarnar and we have assured them that our ministry will review their demands," Paswan said.

NMDC in association with two other PSUs - SAIL and RINL - has also announced setting up of four million tonne steel plant in Chhattisgarh and this could be considered in Nagrnar to meet state government's demand, ministry sources indicated.

The three state-run companies had joined hands to set up an integerated steel plant in Chhattisgarh but had not finalised the location of this plant. The proposed plant is now likely to come up in Nagarnar.
