Bogibeel Road-cum-Rail Bridge to open today; Prime Minister to inaugurate

KOLKATA: Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has supplied nearly half of all the steel required for construction of the 4.94 km long Bogibeel Road-cum-Rail Bridge on river Brahmaputra, which will be inaugurated by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi today.

The inauguration will end a 21 year-long wait by residents of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh for the completion of the double decker rail and road bridge. This led to a jump in the cost of the project which escalated by 85% to Rs 5,960 crore from the sanctioned estimated cost of Rs 3,230.02 crore.

Once open to traffic the bridge will reduce train travel time between Tinsukia in Assam to Arunachal Pradesh’s Naharlagun by 10 hours. SAIL supplied around 35,400 metric tonnes of steel for the construction of Bogibeel Road-cum-Rail Bridge the company said in a statement issued on Monday.


The state run steel company said it has supplied TMT Rebars, Plates and Structurals for the bridge, which has composite welded steel truss girders in its structures. Earlier, SAIL had also supplied 90% steel for the construction of the Dhola-Sadiya bridge, which is India’s longest bridge.
