ArcelorMittal ready to share its R&D with local steel companies

RANCHI/ KOLKATA: Arcelormittal is ready to share its R&D with local steel players, particularly Steel Authority of India (SAIL). This was indicated here by Malay Mukherjee, member on the ArcelorMittal global board.

“ArcelorMittal’s research facilities are among the best in the world. We are not just a steel producer. We are an integrated player in the global metals and mining business and are technologically advanced in the steel and mining sector. We are ready to share our technologies with the local steel players, if they approach us,” Mr Mukherjee told ET.

Mr Mukherjee is in Ranchi along with Sanak Mishra, CEO of ArcelorMittal’s India operations and MP Singh, managing director (iron ore), ArcelorMittal on invitation of Jharkhand government to participate in the Udyog Mela-Enterprise 2007 that kicked off on November 15.

Earlier, SAIL chairman SK Roongta had said the company is open to discussions with ArcelorMittal on technological co-operation and exchange of personnel.

ArcelorMittal employs 1,200 researchers in 13 research centres around the world.
Responding to a specific query on Chiria, Mr Mukherjee said: “We have the technology to develop mines like Chiria. For a 12 million tonne (MT) integrated steel plant, one requires huge reserves of iron ore deposits. Smaller deposits of iron ore won’t serve our purpose.”

His remarks come at a time when the two sides — ArcelorMittal and SAIL — are wrestling for a share of Chiria’s rich reserves. ArcelorMittal needs 600 MT of iron ores over a period of 30 years for its proposed plant in Jharkhand. While it is keen to get a share of Chiria, SAIL has claimed rights to the entire reserves.

Though the state government has promised raw material security to ArcelorMittal, it has till date not been able to fulfil its promise. Chiria is under litigation and the state government is yet to resolve the issue of providing iron ore linkage.

“We would like to set up vocational training centers immediately so as to have more skilled workers in the state. ArcelorMittal is committed to provide scholarships to the deserving boys and girls of the state. Also, sports and recreation facilities will be fully supported by the company,” Mr Mukherjee said.

Referring to the Rehabilitation and Resettlement (R&R) policy of the state, which is yet to be announced by the government, Mr Mukherjee said: “Our R&R policy will follow the R&R policy of the state government. We stand by our commitment to start operations in Jharkhand within 24-25 months.”
