Nippon Sheet Glass to build windshield plant in India

Car windows' supplier Nippon Sheet Glass plans to spend $20 million to build an automotive-glass plant in India.

TOKYO: Nippon Sheet Glass, the world's biggest supplier of car windows, will spend 15 million euros (USD 20 million) to build its first automotive-glass plant in India.

The company's Pilkington unit will build a factory next year in the state of Andhra Pradesh, Tokyo-based Nippon Sheet said on Tuesday. The plant will make five lakh windshields a year, mostly for export to the US and Europe.

Carmakers in India, the second-fastest growing major economy, are increasing production by about 20 per cent annually.

Nippon Sheet Glass is chasing Japanese rival Asahi Glass, which plans to install new lines in Roorkee and controls 80 per cent of India's market for auto glass.
