Government plans legislation to standardise food packaging

The Centre is mulling bringing in a legislation to standardise packaging of food products, Consumer Affairs Minister K V Thomas said.

KOCHI: The Centre is mulling bringing in a legislation to standardise packaging of food products, Consumer Affairs Minister K V Thomas said here today.

This would help avoid misleading of consumers, he told reporters here on the sidelines of a function here.

The Government will also soon convene a conference of the State Legal Metrology Department at Delhi to discuss the matter, he said.

The Bureau of Indian Standards has recently finalised the Indian Standard on basic requirements for street food vendors.

The minister also released the Indian Standards on Good Manufacturing Practises, Good Hygeinic Practises and Food Retail Management at a seminar here on "Food Safety -- Role of Standards" organised by the BIS.
