West Bengal attracts massive investments in iron & steel

The West Bengal government has pressed ahead with the process of industrialisation, with the state receiving investment proposals to the tune of Rs 86,000 crore in 2007, mainly in the iron and steel sector.

KOLKATA: The West Bengal government has pressed ahead with the process of industrialisation, with the state receiving investment proposals to the tune of Rs 86,000 crore in 2007, mainly in the iron and steel sector.

Several companies like JSW Bengal Steel, Jai Balaji group, Adhunik, Videocon and Abhijeet group expressed their intention to set up integrated steel, cement and captive power plants in the state with investments amounting to Rs 86,000 crore.

JSW Bengal Steel has announced an investment of Rs 35,000 crore for setting up a 10 million ton integrated steel plant at Salboni in West Midnapore district of the state.

Jai Balaji pledged to invest Rs 16,000 crore for its project in Purulia and the Videocon Group has also announced its maiden foray into steel making with a proposed investment of Rs 15,000 crore in Asansol region.

The combined investments of Adhunik and Abhijeet group would be in the region of Rs 20,000 crore.

Although the state has no linkage for iron ore supplies, the companies have decided to source the raw material from neighbouring states like Jharkhand and Orissa.

The West Bengal government has also been making efforts to locate a chemical hub in the state which has the potential to draw huge investments.

The year 2007 was also marked by a pitched battle between the villagers and the police in Nandigram, where the government was trying to acquire land to facilitate setting up of a chemical hub by Indonesia's Salem Group.

Tata's small car project at Singur also saw violence flaring up in the state.
