Two die in Durgapur Steel Plant incident; High power committee formed to investigate cause of death

In spite of the best of the medical treatments, both the contractors’ workers died at around 10 pm at DSP Main Hospital.

KOLKATA: Two workers lost their lives in an incident at the Steel Authority of India’s Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP) on Sunday evening. However, the reason for their death was not immediately known. At around 7 pm on December 7, two contractors’ workers, Shyamapada Bauri, aged about 40 years and Sanyasi Gope, aged about 30 years, were found unconscious near Coal Dust Injection distribution unit of DSP’s Blast Furnace No. 3. The two were immediately rushed to DSP Main Hospital.

In spite of the best of the medical treatments, both the contractors’ workers died at around 10 pm at DSP Main Hospital. The area, where they were found unconscious was immediately cordoned off and checked for any abnormality. No apparent abnormality was found in the area. The senior officials of DSP also visited the site immediately. “DSP is making all efforts to find out the real reason for the incident.

A high power committee has been constituted to investigate the probable reasons for the sudden unconsciousness of the contractors’ workers at the site,” a statement issued by SAIL said. This is the third such incident in the last six months at SAIL steel plants with Bhilai and IISCO steel plant also suffering accidents. While there were no loss of live at IISCO fire in September this year, at Bhilai seven lives were lost during the accident in June 2014.
