NEW DELHI: The government on Thursday asked sponge iron manufacturers to be more competitive and contribute to the growth of the steel sector by enhancing their production quality to face stiff competition from primary steel producers.
"The sponge iron industry has to be competitive and ensure optimum utilisation of its capacity. We are concerned about their competitiveness as they would have to compete with the primary steel producers," Steel Secretary R S Pandey said while addressing the Annual General Meeting of the Sponge Iron Manufacturers Association (SIMA) here.
Suggesting that the sponge iron industry should resort to efficient use of energy to lower their cost of production, he argued that in today's fiercely competitive world unless the industry ensured its competitiveness it would become difficult to promote them.
Assuring that the government would do the needful to enable them grow, the Secretary said he has taken the issue of ensuring supply of P and C grade coal for the sponge iron makers with his counterpart in the Coal Ministry.
SIMA president P R Dhariwal demanded that the government should regulate iron ore in view of the growing needs of the domestic steel industry. He argued that export of iron ore could pose a serious problem to the future expansion plans of the steel industry.
