Rescuers battling to free 50 trapped miners

Nearly 100 experts from different Coal India Limited (CIL) subsidiaries are engaged in the rescue of 50 miners trapped underground following a gas leak in BCCL's Nagda colliery here.

DHANBAD: Nearly 100 experts from different Coal India Limited (CIL) subsidiaries are engaged in the rescue of 50 miners trapped underground following a gas leak in BCCL's Nagda colliery here.

According to the register, four out of 57 miners supposed to report for duty at the mine in Bhatdih did not turn up, while three managed to escape when the gas leaked last night, BCCL rescue team official Shabir Ahmed told the media.

Rescuers from BCCL, ECL and CCL, divided into six teams, were taking turns at drilling holes to let in fresh air into the pit, working in shifts of an hour-and-a-half because of the extreme heat in the shaft, he said.

"The strategy has been drawn out following extreme heat conditions inside the mine. The teams will take turns to search the exact location where the miners are trapped," Ahmed added.

The mine was full of gas and appearently there was an explosion inside when mining was on, BCCL chairman-cum- managing director Partha S Bhattacharya, who visited the spot, said last night.

Jharkhand Chief Minister Arjun Munda is slated to visit the site.
