Reliance Power may also get Semaria coal block
The government may allot Coal India-held Semaria block to Reliance Power (RPL) for its Sasan ultra mega power project (UMPP).
Sasan Power Limited (SPL), a special purpose vehicle of RPL, has already been allotted three coal blocks Moher, Moher-Amlohri extension and Chhatrasal in Singrauli by the coal ministry. The eGoM on UMPP has now asked the coal ministry to examine allocation of Semaria coal block to the SPV as it is linked to its existing Moher coal deposit and standalone mining there is difficult and expensive.
Semaria coal block is a small patch of coal deposit with reserves of just over 20 million tonne. Its seams are in continuation with companys existing Moher coal block. So SPL would be in a better position to develop the block along with its existing coal blocks as it would need no additional land for overburden dump or other infrastructure, a source said.
The existing three coal blocks for Sasan have a reserve of about 750 million tonne. Semaria would add another 20 million tonne to the reserves. Together, the coal blocks could feed more than one project of the company.
