More than 28,000 cases relating to safety hazards in mines were reported in the country last year.

NEW DELHI: More than 28,000 cases relating to safety hazards in mines were reported in the country last year, the Rajya Sabha was informed today.

Labour and Employment Minister Oscar Fernandes told the House in a reply that mine managements found lacking in enforcing safety measures faced prosecution and prohibitory orders as part of action against them.

In 2005, 34,596 cases of safety violation in mines were reported as compared to 33,700 the previous year. In 2006, 28,164 such cases came to the government's notice.

Unorganised Workers: The government intends to intorduce the unorganised sector workers' social security bill-2007 in the current session of Parliament, Fernandes said in another reply.

The National Sample Survey Organisation reported that there were 43.3 crore people in the unorganised sector in 2004-05, the Minister said.

Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Punjab and West Bengal implement social security schemes for unorganised sector workers under their own laws and programmes, Fernandes added.
