India's outstanding metallurgist C V Sundaram passes away
One of the country's outstanding metallurgists and former director of Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Chokkanathapuram Venkataraman Sundaram passed away, according to Department of Atomic energy sources.

MUMBAI : One of the country's outstanding metallurgists and former director of Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Chokkanathapuram Venkataraman Sundaram passed away, according to Department of Atomic energy sources here.
He was 78. Sundaram, expert in the metallurgy of 'Rare Metals' had a long career association with the Department of Atomic Energy since 1952. He served as Head, Metallurgy Division, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) during 1975-1982 and then as Director, IGCAR, Kalpakkam.
Sundaram was widely recognised as a pioneer in the field of extractive metallurgy, particularly Zirconium, Titanium and Beryllium.
He contributed to the establishment of production plants for Nuclear Grade Zirconim sponge metal and electronic grade Tantalum anodes and a pilot plant for the Titanium sponge metal at Nuclear Fuel Complex, Hyderabad.
During his tenure as Director, IGCAR, the first criticality of Fast Breeder Test Reactor (FBTR) was achieved on October 18, 1989.
FBTR uses mixed Plutonium Uranium mixed carbide as fuel which continues to remain unique fast breeder fuel in the world till date.
Sundaram was a bachelor. He is bereaved by his brothers, sisters and their families and of course the DAE family.
