High level panel to assess Chiria mines & SAIL's needs
The Centre and Jharkhand govt will set up a high-powered committee to assess the quantum of reserves in Chiria iron ore mines and make a realistic projection of steel giant SAIL's need of the mineral.
The move is expected to resolve the current impasse over the world famous Chiria mines.
"During a meeting last month at Ranchi, both the central and state government officials decided to set up the committee, to be headed by Jharkhand Chief Secretary, to determine the quantum of reserves in Chiria and make a realistic projection of SAIL's needs in view of its greenfield and brownfield expansion plans in Jharkhand," a top Steel Ministry official told PTI.
Secretary in Steel Ministry R S Pandey who represented the Centre in the meeting also asked the committee to submit its report within three months.
At present, both SAIL and the Jharkhand government are locked in a battle over the Chiria mines in the state High Court.
Meanwhile, the Prime Ministers Office (PMO) has asked the Madhu Koda government to renew mining leases of Chiria to Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) and allow it 2 billion tonne of the reserves.
The PMO has asked Jharkhand to immediately allow SAIL access to 1 billion tonne for present use. For another 1 billion tonne, SAIL should strike a separate deal with the state to feed the expansion of its Bokaro Steel Plant and a new plant in the state.
