State-run Hindustan Copper Limited (HCL) has awarded a Rs 2700 crore tender for re-opening and expansion of Rakha Copper Mine, development of a new underground mine at Chapri, and commissioning of a new concentrator plant.

South West Mining Limited (SWML) has been appointed as the Mine Developer cum Operator (MDO) for this project. The mining operation in Rakha Mine was suspended since 2001 on account of unviable operations.

The project has been awarded to SWML for a 20 year period which will be extendable by another 10 years.

An HCL statement said this will result in re-opening of Rakha Mine in East Singbhum, Jharkhand, after more than 20 years.
