Govt to decide on CIL's JV with ArcelorMittal

Coal India (CIL) will initiate dialogue for a joint venture with ArcelorMittal for extracting coal from abandoned and unexplored mines only if the Centre nominates the latter.

KOLKATA: Coal India (CIL) will initiate dialogue for a joint venture with ArcelorMittal for extracting coal from abandoned and unexplored mines only if the Centre nominates the latter.

Left to CIL, the coal major will prefer the expression of interest (EoI) route for selecting a partner, where all the interested parties can apply.

However, CIL has already asked its consultancy subsidiary Centre Mine Planning & Design Institute (CMPDIL) to conduct a detailed study of all its abandoned mines. The study will include generation of maps, estimation of reserves and the quality of coal. CMPDIL is slated to submit its report in a month.

CIL chairman Partha Bhattacharyya said ArcelorMittal had written to the coal ministry a month back showing interest in striking a JV with CIL. A copy of this letter was also sent to CIL.

Eventually, the ministry has asked for our opinion to which we said that CIL will initiate dialogue with ArcelorMittal only if the Centre nominates them for the JV. The Centres clarification is awaited, Mr Bhattacharyya said on Saturday.

Nevertheless, it is open to talks on the technological options available for extracting coal.
