Govt eyes overseas coal mines

The government has shortlisted Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Indonesia and Bangladesh for acquiring coal mines to bridge the domestic shortage, Minister of State for Coal Dasari Narayan Rao said on Monday.

NEW DELHI: The government has shortlisted Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Indonesia and Bangladesh for acquiring coal mines to bridge the domestic shortage, Minister of State for Coal Dasari Narayan Rao said on Monday.
"Companies in steel, cement and power sector would soon heave a sigh of relief as far as sourcing of coal is concerned as the government plans to buy coal mines abroad," he said at a seminar here.
"We have shortlisted Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Indonesia and Bangladesh for acquiring coal mines," Rao said.
The minister said a total of 35 million tonnes of coal was likely to be imported in the financial year ending March 2007 to meet domestic shortage.
