Govt clears Nalco's four CDM projects
The union environment and forest ministry has cleared four environment oriented projects proposed by National Aluminium Company (Nalco) under Clean Development Mechanism (CDM).
The four projects were cleared as the confirmed all norms of the Kyoto Protocol.
Kyoto Protocol is a global cooperative attempt to address threat caused to environment due to increase in green-house gas (GHG) emissions and per capita (GHG) emission correlated with economic prosperity. The protocol encourages industries to earn carbon credits through measures taken to reduce green house gas (GHG) emissions, and to be more environment-friendly.
Nalco has taken up four CDM projects in its smelter, captive power plant (CPP) and refinery units, wherein better technology would be used to further reduce GHG. All these projects have been accorded consent by the Union ministry of environment and forest.
Now, Nalco can earn carbon credit through these CDM projects by reducing GHG, which can be sold in international markets. Nalco is one of the few industries in India for taking such steps and among the pioneers in Orissa.
