Close on the heels of the Karnataka High Court quashing mining leases in forest areas, a crackdown on illegal mining commenced on Sunday, with police seizing two lakh tonnes of iron ore worth Rs 25 crore at Sandur in Bellary.

BELLARY: Close on the heels of the Karnataka High Court quashing mining leases in forest areas, a crackdown on illegal mining commenced on Sunday, with police seizing two lakh tonnes of iron ore worth Rs 25 crore at Sandur in Bellary.

Police raids are currently on to ensure that no illegal mining is being carried out in the area, according to Superintendent of Police, Bellary district, Seemant Kumar.

On August 7, the Karnataka High Court ordered the state government to cancel the permission granted in 2003 to mine owners in 36 blocks and directed both the Centre and the state to draw up new guidelines to govern mining activities.
