Contract workers to go on indefinite strike

About 10,000 contract workers at the Neyveli Lignite Corporation will go on an indefinite strike from Monday, demanding Rs 10 lakh as compensation to the family of a worker who died in an accident.

NEYVELI: About 10,000 contract workers at the Neyveli Lignite Corporation will go on an indefinite strike from Monday, demanding Rs 10 lakh as compensation to the family of a worker who died in an accident.

The contract worker, was travelling in a tractor on the second mine on September 4 when it toppled due to brake failure, killing him.

R Sekar president of the Cuddalore district unit of the AITUC, which is spearheading the strike, said they had decided on this move after the management rejected their demand for Rs 10 lakh as compensation and offered Rs 5.76 lakh, citing company rules.

NLC Deputy Regional Manager (Thermal wing), R Subramani told that power generation would not be affected due to the strike. There are adequate stocks of lignite and all three thermal power stations will generate the total capacity of 2490 MW," he said.
