Commerce & Industry Ministry for action plan to improve productivity

NPC, under the DIPP, has also recommended setting up of a productivity improvement committee to prepare the plan of action for 2015.

NEW DELHI: The Commerce and Industry Ministry has suggested that government departments, including public sector units, formulate action plan to improve productivity in line with the 'Zero Defect Zero Effect' call given by the Prime Minister.

The National Productivity Council (NPC), under the Department of Industrial Policy Promotion, has also recommended setting up of a productivity improvement committee to prepare the plan of action for 2015.

Besides, it has suggested that the ministries and PSUs organise special talks, discussions, meetings and workshops focusing on problems being faced on the productivity front, sources said.

The NPC's suggestions come against the backdrop of its plans to celebrate February 12-18 as the 'National productivity Week' every year so as to make it a mass movement.

The theme chosen for this year's observance is 'Make in India: Zero Defect Zero Effect' and an elaborate programme has been chalked out for its celebration. February 12 will be observed as 'Productivity Day' by the council.

The productivity improvement will "come about only if we focus on production of zero defect quality goods, in a cost effective, environment friendly manner", an official said.

In his maiden independence day address, Modi had invited the global business community to set up manufacturing facilities in India giving the slogan 'Make in India'.

He had also exhorted the youth to become entrepreneurs and manufacture 'zero-defect' goods with a view to making the country a global export hub.

The NPC was set up to promote productivity and quality consciousness in the country.
