Coal India's Rs 3,000 crore import tender fails to get bids

A tender by Coal India for the import of 5 million tonnes of the fuel, valued at about Rs 3,000 crore, failed to elicit any response.

KOLKATA: A tender by Coal India for the import of 5 million tonnes of the fuel, valued at about Rs 3,000 crore, failed to elicit any response.

The tender floated in November sought to appoint a vendor through competitive bidding to import coal to bridge a shortfall in supplies to customers.

"There is no bidder for the tender," Coal India Director (Marketing) B K Saxena told PTI after the deadline passed today. "We will analyse and then the company will take a call."

Coal India sought to import the fuel on behalf of its consumers on a cost-plus basis to meet its fuel supply agreement obligations. The miner would supply 65 per cent of the total requirement from domestic sources and 15 per cent through imports.

India's coal demand is about 600 million tonnes a year against production of 482 million tonnes by Coal India.
