Coal India achieves production target for first time in several months

Coal India achieved its overall monthly production target in April 2014. This is for the first time in several months that the coal major has been able to meet its production target.

KOLKATA: Coal India has achieved its overall monthly production target in April 2014. This is for the first time in several months that the coal major has been able to meet its production target.

It has been possible mainly because five subsidiaries out of eight, including Eastern Coalfields, Bharat Coking Coal Ltd, Central Coalfields, Mahanadi Coalfields and North Eastern Coalfields produced more than their targets for the month pulling up the overall production figure, allowing the company to meet its total production target for the month.

According to figures released by the company, Eastern Coalfields produced 3.30 million tonnes during April, against a target of 3.18 million tonnes, surpassing its target by 4%. It registered a 9.3% growth over the previous corresponding period.

Bharat Coking Coal produced 2.95 million tonnes and exceeded its target by 7% during the month registering a 9.1% growth. Central Coalfields surpassed its production target by 8% at 3.13 million tonnes although the subsidiary registered a 10% fall in production against the previous period.

Mahanadi Coalfields produced 14% more than the target at 9.93 million tonnes and achieved a 21.5% growth during April. North Eastern Coalfields also overshot targets by 6%.

Subsidiaries that missed its targets were Northern Coalfields, Western Coalfileds and South Eastern Coalfields.

Northern Coalfields missed production target by 4% but achieved a near 18% growth during April 2014, Western Coalfields missed its target by 8% and witnessed a 2.7% fall in production. South Eastern Coalfields on the other hand, missed targets by 13% at 9.06 million tonnes and saw a 9.4% fall in production against the previous corresponding period.
