KOCHI: The Centre will give "full support" to a Rs 1,400-crore titanium sponge project to be set up in Kerala under an MoU signed with a Russian company by buying its products that are needed by defence industries, a senior official said today.

Talking to reporters on the sidelines of a defence - industry symposium here, Defence Production Secretary K P Singh described the inking of the MoU as a major step.

When it was pointed out that the Congress-led opposition was making a hue and cry over the signing of the agreement, he said: "We are a consumer and we require the (titanium sponge) products which have various applications in defence industries.

"We will buy the products from whoever produces them," Singh said.

The project is to be set up at the Kerala Minerals and Metals Limited site in Chavara.
