US-based Emerson to provide automation solutions for NTPC’s Orissa units

Emerson will be providing automation technology and expertise for two new 800-megawatt supercritical generating units of NTPC.

MUMBAI: US-based engineering company Emerson will be providing automation technology and expertise for two new 800-megawatt supercritical generating units of NTPC at the Darlipali Super Thermal Power Station in the Sundergarh District, Odisha, India.

The first unit at the power plant would be commissioned by December 2017 while the second unit would be done three months after that. Emerson project teams will engineer, install and commission Ovation systems to monitor and control each unit’s supercritical boiler and critical balance-of-plant processes and equipment.

“Supercritical technologies boost the efficiency of coal-based electricity generation while reducing carbon and other emissions, but the high temperatures and pressures involved make them more challenging to control. We welcome this opportunity to apply that experience to these important national assets,” said Amit Paithankar, managing director, Emerson Process Management, India.

Emerson has earlier worked with NTPC to automate units at the Sipat, Simhadri, and Tanda power stations and is currently carrying out projects at several other sites.
