SMEFI calls on industrial workers to fight for their demands

Industrial workers should unite and fight for their legitimate rights from the government, SMEFI President Dr Shanti Patel said.

THANE: The industrial workers in the country should unite and fight for their legitimate rights from the government, Steel, Metal & Engineering Workers Federation of India ( SMEFI) president Dr Shanti Patel said.

Inaugurating the two-day 9th Triennial Convention of the SMEFI here last evening, Patel said almost all the trade unions had some political affiliations on account of which the workers suffered a lot.

The workers do not have their independent party like in some countries and hence are unable to take up the issues at an appropriate level, he regretted.

He expressed concern over the number of permanent workers in the industries drastically coming down and their place being taken by contractual and temporary workers.

"The working class is subject to untold hardships on account of the faulty policies," he said, adding that industrial workers, irrespective of their unions, should unite and fight the wrong industrial and labour policies.
