MUMBAI: Mazagon Dock, which makes naval ships for defence, plans to set up a design office in collaboration with a foreign partner.

As a first step, Mazagon would float a bid to appoint a consultant to guide it through various stages of this business.

On looking for a foreign partner for collaboration, Krishnan said it would help Mazagon learn the latest in the field.

"We are looking for a foreign partner who is superior to us," he added.

In the past, Mazagon Dock was into offshore development. It has developed over 65 platforms for ONGC.

"We might re-enter offshore development," he said. Mazagon Dock, which has the biggest orderbook in the country for shipbuilding, has laid out a modernisation plan for Rs 500 crore by 2010. It is developing a wet basin.

At present, Mazagon can make six ships at a time. With the modernisation of the wet basin, it can make up to 10 ships at a time.

Mazagon is making six submarines for the Indian Navy, besides making a dredger for Dredging Corporation of India that can cut a rock in the water.
