L&T unit commissions blast furnace at Jamshedpur

Engineering and construction major Larsen and Toubro led consortium has commissioned the country's largest blast furnace at Tata Steel Ltd, Jamshedpur.

MUMBAI: Engineering and construction major Larsen and Toubro led consortium has commissioned the country's largest blast furnace at Tata Steel Ltd, Jamshedpur.

The blast furnace has a volume of 3,814 cum and has a capacity to produce 2.5 million tons per annum of hot metal, L&T said in a filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange, adding that the project got completed in 25 months.

The said blast furnace had been awarded to L&T and Italy based Paul Wurth for design, manufacture and commissioning of a furnace with axillary facilities on a turnkey basis.

Paul Wurth's scope covered basic engineering, supply of proprietary and special equipment as well as technical supervisory services while L&T's scope spanned detailed engineering, automation works including civil, structural and erection works.

The L&T-Paul Wurth consortium is currently executing two more 2.5 MTPA blast furnaces on a turnkey basis at Visakhapatnam steel plant and Bhusan Steel Plant scheduled for commissioning in 2009 and 2010 respectively.

Shares of L&T were trading at Rs 3,028 at the BSE, up 1.56 per cent from the previous close.
