This dam is a long-pending project of the Government of Bihar. The project was considered and accepted by the technical advisory committee on irrigation and flood control of erstwhile Planning Commission in 1975 for an estimated cost of Rs. 8.0346 crore.
"Work of construction of Barnar Reservoir in Jamui district of Bihar is pending for a long time. Water resources projects are planned, funded, executed and maintained by the State Governments themselves as per their own resources and priority," Minister of State for Jal Shakti said in Lok Sabha in February this year.
He informed the Parliament that the state government has made a total expenditure of Rs. 63.89 crore on the project.
The authorities submitted a project proposal for cost revision in CWC with estimated cost of Rs. 2,302.22 crore at 2022-23 price level in October 2023. The same was returned to the state government on January 2024 with a suggestion to prepare a new DPR with updated hydrology, irrigation planning and cost estimate with 2023-24 price level.
