KOLKATA: Strategic PSU Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) has earmarked a capital expenditure of Rs 2,000 crore during the 11th five year plan for expanding mining activity to meet the planned additions to nuclear power generation capacity at 6780 MW.

The government would provide Rs 1000 crore in the form of budgetary support and the rest would be raised from internal accruals, UCIL Chairman and managing director R Gupta told the media here on Friday.

He said that UCIL would undertake fresh uranium mining activity in the states of Jharkhand, Karnataka and Meghalaya and Andhra Pradesh.

Gupta said that there are import limitations of uranium at the moment, adding that this might go once India signed the treaty with the United States which would also allow UCIL to take up mining activity in overseas countries like Australia and Canada.

"However, this process would take time," Gupta said.

According to estimates, India could generate upto 20,000 MW of power by 2020 from nuclear sources on the basis of indigenous reserves of 61,000 tonnes.
