Japan seeks relook on entry tax impacting MCC from Bengal govt

Japan today requested the West Bengal government to have a relook at the entry tax levied by the state government last April, which is impacting Japanese chemical major MCC PTA.

KOLKATA: Japan today requested the West Bengal government to have a relook at the entry tax levied by the state government last April, which is impacting Japanese chemical major MCC ( Mistubishi Chemical Corporation) PTA.

"Today, Japanese Ambassador (T Yagi) met me and requested me to look into the issue of entry tax," Industry Minister Partha Chatterjee said.

He said the state would earn Rs 80-100 crore from the levvy of this tax.

Meanwhile, Haldia-based Dhunseri Petrochemicals has sought the abolition of the tax, saying the levy directly affects it to the tune of Rs 8-10 crore.

"This directly impacts us severely when margins are wafer thin in this industry. We have been requesting for the waiver benefit," a company source said.
