GAIL, RCF to invest Rs 2,400 cr to set up fertiliser plant
Marking its foray into fertiliser business, state-run GAIL has tied up with Rashtriya Chemical and Fertilizers (RCF) to set up a Rs 2,400-crore integrated plant in Orissa.
"We have initialed a preliminary agreement with RCF to jointly explore potential for setting up a urea-cum-ammonia manufacturing plant at Talcher," Gail Chairman and Managing Director U D Choubey told reporters.
The plant would be based on gas derived from coal using surface coal gasification technology. Around 7.76 million standard cubic meters per day of synthetic gas would be needed for the project.
"The project schedule and equity patterns would be decided after RCF completes a feasibility study which may take at least 6 months," he said adding Gail has already applied to Coal India Ltd for allocation of a coal field for the project.
The plant would manufacture 2,940 tons of urea per day and would need 5,000 tons of coal a year for conversion into feedstock.
Choubey said Gail's board today approved an MoU with Baroda Municipal Corporation for setting up a city gas distribution project in the city.
Gail will have 26 per cent stake in the joint venture while Baroda Municipal Corporation would own 24 per cent. The rest will be with financial institutions and others.
Baroda Municipal Corporation is the first in the country that began providing piped gas to households for cooking purposes and the proposed joint venture would expand the piped gas network as also set up CNG dispensing stations for automobiles.
