"The state government has sent a proposal for the Petroleum & Chemicals and Petrochemicals Investment Region (PCPIR) at Nayachar, near Haldia which has an area of 13,000 to 14,000 hectare. The criteria is for a minimum of 25,000 hectares. However, we will consider it," Paswan said.
He was speaking to the reporters on the sidelines of inauguration of the second National Institute of Pharmaceuticals Education and Research (NIPER).
The state government has requested the minister not to rule out the PCPIR as it was facing land acquisition problems.
"We will forward the proposal to the empowered committee for selection after the project comes from the state government," Paswan said.
Additional Director in the Ministry of Environment and Forests Dr A Senthil Vel, said in a letter to a NGO, "The Nayachar island falls within the Coastal Regulation Zone and under the category of CRZ-I and CRZ-III ... In the CRZ area setting up of industries/expansion of existing industries is a prohibited activity."
