The centre will soon launch a Technology Collaboration Portal (TCL) to act as a bridge between research institutions and the chemical manufacturing industry. This portal will allow the chemicals industry to raise requests of technology transfer and know-how assistance for localising production said Nivedita Shukla Verma, Secretary, Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals.

These requests can be answered by research institutions that will have access to assistance being sought.

Verma said research institutions are being encouraged to list all their available capabilities on the portal, which is still work-in-progress, to help domestic industry get a better assessment of facilities available in the country.

“About 1000 industries have registered on that portal and about 40 institutions have come online,” she said while requesting other research institutions to also join and showcase available technology. “That will help them to reach the industry and transfer technology,” Verma said.

Highlighting the challenges of imports before the Indian industry, Verma said, “There are certain countries which are more advanced than us in technology, so there could only be a limited amount of protection that our industry could get because of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) regulations.”

“We face some inherent challenges of raw material availability,” she said while adding that the only solution for the situation is to develop new technologies in the country.

Verma also asked the chemicals industry to share raw materials and production data with the centre. This will help better plan policies for addressing concerns of the sector.
