Atul Chaturvedi is new fertilizer secretary

Atul Chaturvedi, a 1974 Indian Administrative Services (IAS) officer of Uttar Pradesh, Monday took over as secretary, department of fertilizer, ministry of chemicals and fertilizer.

NEW DELHI: Atul Chaturvedi, a 1974 Indian Administrative Services (IAS) officer of Uttar Pradesh, Monday took over as secretary, department of fertilizer, ministry of chemicals and fertilizer.

Prior to this, Chaturvedi was working as special secretary and finance advisor in the ministry of rural development, and was monitoring the finance part of the government's ambitious National Rural Employment Guarantee (NREG) scheme.
Chaturvedi's new assignment comes at a time when Indian farmers, particularly in Karnataka and other parts, had recently complained of shortage of fertilizer.

Indian farmers get fertilizers at highly subsidised rates. The government paid around Rs.479.79 billion as subsidy to fertilizer manufacturers in 2007-08 as compared to Rs.259.52 billion paid in the year before.
