'No plans to set up regulatory body for cement'

The government on Wednesday said it is not considering setting up a regulatory body for monitoring the cement sector as prices of the building material have remained stable in the last one year.

NEW DELHI: The government on Wednesday said it is not considering setting up a regulatory body for monitoring the cement sector as prices of the building material have remained stable in the last one year.

The government has taken a number of measures to increase cement supply in the market to cater to increased demand. With these measures the average price of cement has largely stabilised, showing an increase of 4.4 per cent between March 2007 and March 2008, Minister of State for Industry Ashwani Kumar said in a written reply to Rajya Sabha.

"The setting up of a Cement Regulatory Authority is therefore not considered necessary," he said.

He said the government will take steps to check cartelisation and profiteering by cement companies.

In reply to a separate question, Kumar said the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations is likely to submit its final report on the impact of large retail giants on neighbourhood stores by end of April.
