Developed with a capital investment of over Rs 400 crore, the facility has an installed grinding capacity of 2 million tonnes per annum (2 MTPA). The unit is expected to improve cement availability across southern Assam and neighbouring states while generating over 1,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Sajjan Bhajanka Chairman of Star Cement Ltd, Tushar Bhajanka Deputy Managing Director, Pradeep Purohit Chief Operating Officer, along with senior company officials, senior government officers, industry representatives, and members of the local community.
The Chief Minister said the commissioning of the unit reflects growing investor confidence in Assam and aligns with the State’s objective of balanced regional development.
“Industrial investments of this scale strengthen infrastructure capacity and create sustainable employment opportunities for our youth. The establishment of this unit in Barak Valley demonstrates that economic growth is reaching all parts of the State. Our Government remains committed to facilitating responsible industrial expansion, improving connectivity and creating an ecosystem in which businesses can invest with confidence while contributing to regional development."
Star Cement stated that the expansion was supported by the State Government’s industry-friendly policies and stable governance framework.
Chairman Sajjan Bhajanka said the project reflects the company’s long-term commitment to the region.
“The Cachar unit represents our enduring commitment to the people of Barak Valley. We believe this project will strengthen cement availability, stimulate local enterprise, generate employment, and contribute meaningfully to Assam’s infrastructure growth story,” he said.
Tushar Bhajanka added that the new facility would improve supply-chain efficiency and help meet rising regional demand.
“With infrastructure activity increasing across the Northeast and eastern India, this unit will ensure timely service to customers and support ancillary sectors such as transport, logistics and local vendor networks".
Pradeep Purohit highlighted the operational focus of the new facility. “The Hilara grinding unit has been developed with an emphasis on operational efficiency and consistent product quality. Our technical teams have ensured that the plant meets high performance standards”.
Strategically located, the Hilara facility will cater to growing infrastructure and housing demand in southern Assam and neighbouring states including Tripura, Mizoram and Manipur. By reducing dependence on supplies transported from distant manufacturing hubs, the plant is expected to lower logistics costs and improve delivery timelines for public and private projects.
