Venus files antibiotic patent application in 48 nations

Venus Remedies on Friday said it has filed patent application for an antibiotic in 48 countries, having good market potential for this formulation.

MUMBAI: Pharmaceutical company Venus Remedies on Friday said it has filed patent application for an antibiotic in 48 countries, having good market potential for this formulation.

"Venus Remedies has filed for patent in 48 countries around the globe for the national phase of its second Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) application for its research product, fixed dose combination of latest generation cephalosporin with a Beta-Lactamase," the company said in a communique to the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).

The company had filed the Indian patent for this antibiotic in 2004 and the PCT in November 2005, which has now entered in its national phase.

The 48 countries, where the patent protection has been applied, include the US, European Union, Japan, Middle-East, Brazil, Australia and New Zealand.

This product has a market size worth more than 1 billion dollar worldwide.

Earlier in May, the company had filed application in 49 countries for the national phase of its first PCT application for its research product, 'Non-Aqueous, Liquid Parenteral Formulation'.

Shares of Venus were trading at Rs 475, up 2.65 per cent on BSE in morning trade.
