Two Ranbaxy drugs under NPPA scanner

NEW DELHI: Pharmaceutical major Ranbaxy’s two antibiotic formulation packs have come under drug price regulator National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority’s (NPPA) scanner for allegedly increasing prices beyond 20% in a year.
A company can’t increase the prices of control-free formulations more than 20% in any consecutive 12 months.
NPPA has asked the government to control prices of Ranbaxy’s ampicillin brands, Roscillin 250 mg and Roscillin 500 mg, for allegedly increasing prices by more than a fifth of the price-to-the-retailer in the 12 months up to February ’05.
Now, the drug major has to defend its prices before the chemicals and fertilisers ministry, which would then take a call on NPPA’s recommendations. The ministry will take a final decision after hearing both the sides.
NPPA has started scrutinising 45,000 formulation packs every month, indicating that more firms may similar directives. It had recently asked drug majors including Cipla, Wockhardt, Zydus Cadila and Shreya Life Sciences to reduce prices of some of their brands that exceeded the 20% limit.
