Sun Pharma launches first branded drug BromSite in US

MUMBAI: India’s largest drug maker Sun Pharma announced it will launch its first branded ophthalmic drug BromSite in the US through Sun Ophthalmics - a dedicated division to market drugs related to eye related disorders. Approved by the US FDA in April this year, BromSite is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug indicated for the treatment of postoperative inflammation and prevention of ocular pain in patients undergoing cataract surgery.

In September 2015, Sun acquired California-based InSite Vision as part of its plans to build a specialty business in the US. Sun has identified ophthalmic and skincare drugs as its specialty focus. At the time the drug was approved, Sun had cited IMS MAT data that assessed the NSAID ophthalmic drugs market approximately at $400 million, with a growth of 8 per cent and generating four million prescriptions.

Abhay Gandhi, CEO, North America business, Sun Pharma said clinical studies have reinforced BromSite’s strong safety and efficacy profile in cataract surgery patients, culminating in this FDA indication for the prevention of ocular pain following surgery.

The launch marks Sun Pharma’s entry into the branded drugs business in the US, a segment that many generic drug companies are targeting as they gain scale and chase steady revenue streams.

Last month, Sun acquired Ocular Technologies to gain access to Seciera, a drug under development for dry eye disease.

Market analysts said BromSite is expected to take off well as Sun has spent a considerable amount in recruiting field representatives to promote the product. It has put in place over 100 staff in its branded business so far. However this could not be confirmed by the company.

Sun is also preparing to file for US FDA approval of its psoriasis drug tildrakizumab.
