Serum Institute seeks indemnity after talks for waiving off liabilities for foreign vaccine makers

Serum Institute of India, the maker of Covishield, has sought indemnity against all liabilities, ANI reported, quoting sources.

This comes a day after reports suggested that the Centre may grant indemnity to foreign vaccine makers, including Pfizer and Moderna.

“The discussions are ongoing with Pfizer and (we) are close to achieving a breakthrough. We are ready to support them in terms of indemnity with certain conditions, similar to what has been granted in other countries,” said a government official.


"Not just Serum Institute of India (SII), all the vaccine companies should get indemnity protection against liabilities if foreign companies are granted the same," the sources added.


Receiving indemnity may encourage foreign manufacturers to bring their vaccines to India.

Earlier, the government had relaxed rules for foreign vaccine makers - waiving off the requirement of testing of every batch by Central Drugs Laboratory, as well as mandatory bridging trials.
