More than the commercial effects, industry officials are concerned that the development could have implications on the perception of the quality of drugs manufactured by Indian generic companies.

In addition, innovator companies will try to used this development to corroborate their argument that the quality of drugs manufactured in the country is suspect.

Sources close to Ranbaxy, however, downplayed the development. They pointed out that recalls are common in the global pharma industry and several drug discovery companies have withdrawn their products in the past.
