The medical device maker, which has started full-scale production at its first manufacturing facility in India near Chennai, is aiming to reach an annual capacity of 3 million blood pressure monitors by 2028, as it looks to tap the country’s largely underpenetrated home blood pressure monitoring market.
“India remains an important growth market for us, with significant opportunities to expand home blood pressure monitoring,” Okada said. “During the initial phase, 100% of the factory’s production output will be allocated to the Indian domestic market,” she said.
“The immediate priority is to supply products tailored to the needs of Indian consumers in a timely manner, helping promote wider adoption of home blood pressure monitoring and contributing to efforts to address the country's cardiovascular health challenges,” Okada added.
“Over the medium to long term, Omron Healthcare aims to develop Chennai into a manufacturing base supplying healthcare devices to international markets, while strengthening the flexibility and resilience of its global manufacturing network,” she said.
Despite India’s substantial hypertension burden, fewer than 5% of Indian households regularly use a home blood pressure monitor, she said. According to the company’s estimates, Omron Healthcare held approximately 40% of India’s home blood pressure monitor market in 2025. India accounted for around 3% of its global sales in FY2025, the financial year ended March 2026.
The approximately 24,000-square-metre Chennai facility commenced full-scale production in October. It has five production lines manufacturing five blood pressure monitor models for the Indian market. The company has not disclosed the investment in the facility or its expected first-year production volumes.
The company is also looking to increase domestic sourcing of components. The Chennai factory carries out assembly through to finished blood pressure monitors in India, drawing on production technologies and quality-control expertise developed at its facilities in Japan and Vietnam.
“We are continuing to identify and develop relationships with local suppliers to increase the proportion of components sourced domestically, supporting the government’s Make in India initiative,” Okada said.
Local manufacturing is expected to improve logistical efficiencies and strengthen domestic supply, although the company has not committed to specific retail price reductions. “Our priority is to provide reliable, high-quality products suited to the Indian market, including in terms of affordability,” Okada said.
The company plans to expand access to home monitoring through increased domestic production, awareness initiatives and collaboration with healthcare professionals
