Natco launches generic of oncology drug

This would be the first launch of the generic version of Pemetrexed in the world.

HYDERABAD: Hyderabad-based Natco Pharma Ltd has launched a generic version of the oncology drug Pemetrexed. While Natco's brand Pemnat would be available at Rs 25,500 per vial, the imported medicine would cost about Rs 79,000.

This would be the first launch of the generic version of Pemetrexed in the world. Being a pre-1995 invention, the company is not expecting any litigation over the generic launch, according to a company release on Monday.

Prescribed after prior chemotherapy, the availability of Pemnat, a 20 ml vial injection, would help enhance the options for non-small cell lung cancer. It could also be used for the treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma, where curative surgery was is not possible, the release added.
