Lifestyle drugs witness double-digit growth
Lifestyle factors like physical inactivity, a salt-rich diet rich in fatty foods and smoking, are leading for an alarming increase in cardio-vascular diseases.
CVD drugs like Minipres-XL , Amplopres-AT and Cardace registered a robust sales growth of nearly 15%, 22% and over 13% in the 12-month period ended June this year, according to ORG-IMS . (See graph).
The poor and those living in rural areas are more at risk of developing chronic diseases and dying prematurely from them due to reasons like greater exposure to risks and decreased access to health services . Though it is widely believed that hypertension is mainly an urban phenomenon, aggravated by factors like stress and a sedentary lifestyle, studies now indicate that it is increasingly prevalent in rural areas as well.
The estimated prevalence of coronary heart disease in rural is around 4%, and 8-10 % in urban areas, among adults (over 20 years).
This represents a two-fold rise in rural areas , and a six-fold increase in urban areas over the last four decades. Some studies now indicate overall prevalence of hypertension to be around 33% in rural populations in the northeast , 20% in north and 12.5% in the south. Hypertension is directly responsible for 57% of all stroke deaths and 24% of all coronary heart disease deaths in the country.
Recent studies have used the criterion for hypertension as systolic BP > 140mm Hg or diastolic BP > 90 mm Hg (millimetre of mercury), while WHO report defines hypertension as a systolic pressure equal to or greater than 160 mm Hg/or a diastolic pressure equal to or greater than 95 mm.
People still believe that hypertension is a disease that can be cured, and stop or reduce medication when blood pressure levels fall. Patients need to understand that hypertension is the first sign that many organs in the body are under attack , says Dr Chandrashekhar Potkar director medical and regulatory affairs, Pfizer India.
