Homoeopathy now bets on combo drugs

The rising demand for safe alternative medicine that has no side effects is leading to the growing demand in the segment. Work hard, sleep harder | Grandma remedies

AHMEDABAD: The Rs 500-crore Indian homoeopathy pharma market will see its future growth coming from combination drugs. The rising demand for safe alternative medicine that has no side effects is leading to the growing demand in the segment. As a result, Indian companies are aggressively chasing the combination drug market, creating their own research-based combination and getting it patented.

Most of the combination drugs are OTC products used for treatment of joint pain, skin ailment, allergic reaction, cold and cough, mental stress, anxiety etc. Companies are getting their combination drug patented and selling them under own brand names. With Indian abilities to produce drugs at cheaper prices, demand has been pouring in from neighbouring countries, especially, Pakistan.

Changing lifestyles have necessitated drugs with quick action and no side-effects so that the patient can get back to work the soonest.

Dr Batra's Positive Health Clinic deputy MD Dr Akshay Batra told ET, "One of the major reasons behind the popularity is their easy use, without doctor's consultation." Also, there are few worries about any side effect, he added.

"Combination drugs started about 10 to 15 years ago in India when practicing homoeopaths would themselves combine the drugs depending on the patient's requirement.
